Pregnant Photography

By Debbie Gagnon

I remember being 10 weeks into my pregnancy, walking into a friend's house, and seeing pregnant pictures of her, and I knew I wanted that too.

Many mothers don't ever consider going to a photographer when they are pregnant. They may snap a few photos, but many don't want their picture taken because they feel they are too huge and don't want to look like a cow. I would strongly encourage you to go to Google and type in the words - maternity photographer or pregnant photography. Then browse through the results.

Here are three huge tips for finding a pregnant or maternity photographer:

First, do a search on Google (just use the above search box) and you will then see a lot of choices. Don't be overwhelmed. Browse through 10-20 websites and look at the galleries of maternity pictures. If the website doesn't grab you, then keep moving. The website is a reflection of the photographer. Browse through the galleries and see which collection really seems to grab you. This is because the personality of the photographer comes through his or her pictures.

If you can imagine yourself in any of those photographs, then you may have found the right photographer to begin exploring. Don't start looking at prices yet, just go through as many websites as you can.

Second, remember these photographs are not necessarily going to be ones that you spread to all your family and friends. In my opinion, pregnant photography is more of a personal thing. Yes, take a few shots that others might enjoy, but these are really for you and your husband. Think "intimate." Get close. Show your belly off. Pregnant belly pictures are incredible! Show your breasts off. You or your husband can put hands over your nipples if you don't want complete nude pregnancy photos, but show off your wonderful body.

I say all this because you are only in this stage for a few months of your life. Capture every aspect of your pregnancy. Take some maternity photos for the family, some cute, fun shots, but also remember to get those intimate photos of you by yourself, and/or your husband with you as well.

Third, is to consider the cost. Quality maternity photography is not cheap. It's not like you are going down to Sears for a package of pictures. Many of my friends have spent anywhere from $300 to $1500 for theirs. Just plan ahead. If you get your photos taken in your final trimester, depending upon where you are now, you may have 3 - 6 months to set money aside for getting the pregnant photography package you wish to get.
